How the 3-5-2 works

In possession the outside centre-backs step into midfield or carry forward, the wing-backs push to the last line, and the front two work channels together. Out of possession the wing-backs drop to make a back five, and the midfield three shuffles across to deny central entries. Its structural weakness is the space behind advancing wing-backs - fast wide forwards attack exactly that zone on transitions. Use it against narrow midfields you want to outnumber, or when your best defenders are centre-backs and your best athletes play wide.
