How the 4-4-2 Diamond works

Everything wide belongs to the full-backs, who must provide the entire width of the team on both sides - the most demanding full-back roles in any standard system. In return you get central superiority almost by default: three passing options through the middle and two strikers to finish the moves. Opponents attack the diamond through the wide zones its shape concedes, so the shuttlers spend defensive phases sprinting to cover. Best with a genuine 10, mobile strikers who split wide willingly, and full-backs with wingers' lungs.
