How the 4-5-1 works

Its attacking life depends entirely on how the midfield five is composed - with genuine wingers it becomes a 4-3-3 the moment possession is won; with five central-minded players it stays a block that attacks through set pieces and long balls to the striker. The striker's hold-up play is everything: if the first clearance never sticks, the block defends forever. Pick it for difficult away games, to protect a lead, or when the opponent's strength is central combination play you intend to suffocate.
