5-3-2 Formation — Compact Defence With a Front Two

The 5-3-2 is the shape teams choose when the first job is not conceding: five defenders make the penalty area almost impossible to enter centrally, a midfield three screens in front, and two strikers stay high enough to make clearing your lines mean something. It is not inherently negative - with attacking wing-backs it becomes a 3-5-2 in possession.

How the 5-3-2 works
The block defends narrow and compact, conceding the wings until the cross comes in, where three centre-backs win their duels. Attacks are transitions: the front two hold the ball up or run channels, supported by the nearest midfielder and the wing-backs' overlaps. The gap between defence and midfield is the shape's pressure point - if the midfield three gets stretched, opponents feed the pockets in front of the back five. Use it to protect leads, frustrate stronger opponents, or as a platform for a counter-attacking game plan.
