How the 6-a-side 2-2-1 works

The box's diagonals are the key passing lanes: defender to far midfielder, midfielder to striker's feet. Defensively the nearest midfielder presses while the other screens - never both chasing, which is the most common small-sided mistake at every age. The striker works angles for one-twos off the boards or touchline and is first outlet on every regain. Rotate who plays the striker role; on small pitches it is the most tiring position, not the most glamorous one.
